About Ponda

After remaining a part of the dominions of Sultan Adil Shah of Bijapur,
Ponda fell to the Portuguese in 1791 who annexed it along with the nearby
talukas of Quepem, Canacona and Sanguem. A few small factories and
industrial estates have sprung up on the outskirts of the town due to its
proximity to some of Goa's largest iron ore mines. There is a beautiful
concentration of culture, music, drama and poetry in Ponda. It also houses
the temples of Lord Mangesh (Shiva), Lord Nagesh, Lord Ganapati, Lord
Ramnath and the Goddesses Mahalasa and Shantdurga. Safa
